Athersley Recreation advanced to the Third Round of the Toolstation NCEL League Cup last night with a 3-1 home win over Division One high-flyers Eccleshill United –and for Penguins’ Manager Luke Potter, it was a good job well done, reports Colin Muncie.
In front of 60 Rec-In-Crew members, Eagles and neutral fans at Sheerien Park, Jamie Moxon’s second minute goal gave the home side an advantage they held until the interval. Ethan Lebad levelled for the visitors on 76 minutes, but late strikes from Simon Poole (79 minutes) and Kai Hancock just before the end sealed Athersley’s place in the draw.
Luke told the Bootiful Game “It was a good game of football, with both teams trying to win the game. The first half was open, and we created numerous chances to kill the game off after the break. After going down to ten men for forty minutes, we showed good character to dig in and win the game against a good Eccleshill side”
“I’m sure they won’t be far off the top two in Division One come the end of the season”.
