It has been over 110 days since AFC Mansfield have tasted a league defeat and this strecthes back to the end of October. The same can be said for Penistone Church, but just add seven days onto that – and with two of the best sides in the league battling it out – it ended goalless in an action-packed game at Church View Road.
AFC Mansfield assistant manager Mark Ward commented, “Well a heavy pitch swirling winds and two teams in form set the tone for what looked like would be an enthralling game, but ended in a 0-0 draw. Both teams backed their sides current form and both teams tried to win the game but today I think both defences were quality and came out on top in a game of very few chances and I think a draw was a fair result.
“Penistone had a few good phases of play more in the first half but I think we had the best chance of the game a superb header from Ollie Fearon and an incredible save from the Penistone keeper other than that half chances at best.
“We worked hard as usual huffed and puffed but just lacked that cutting edge and quality in the final third today. The lads have been amazing so for this season and to see their faces in the changing rooms after disappointed in a draw shows me what we’re about and what it means to them so even though we didn’t manage to pick up three points I’m walking away with a good feeling.”
