It has been a superb season for NCEL Premier Division side Penistone Church who lie 8th in the standings, in their inaugral season in the NCEL top flight.
They reached the final of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup Final after a 2-0 win last night against Maltby Main, their third final in just two seasons.
Manager Ian Richards was obviously over the moon, “Another special night for the football club last night as we progressed into our 3rd cup final in the last two seasons.
“It is an exceptional achievement by the players who continue to exceed expectations and achieve continued success. It was a tough, physical, competitive encounter but in the two games we have played against Maltby we have not conceded a goal.
“Doing this gives you a brilliant platform to go win the match and last night we won both halves by having a bit of quality at the right times with both goals being of the highest order.
“I have huge respect for Maltby and how consistent and how well they done this season in the league, like us they are a community club with a close knit team and management who have a strong spirit and togetherness and deserve to be 5th in the league. Maltby paid us great respect by starting in a 4-4-2 formation which is not their usual set up and then changed it twice more to try and match us and compete.
“Huge credit to my players who executed the game plan brilliantly and trusted the system and each other. We cannot wait for a huge following from our community for the final at either Bramall Lane or Hillsboro.
“We must now refocus our effort and concentration on beating Harrogate Railway away on Saturday. We must put the cup final to one side and focus on winning as many of our final 10 games in our debut season at the NCEL Premier Division.
“We still have the opportunity of finishing 6th and alongside gaining a shirt for the final the players must use this to motivate them for every minute of every game between now and the end of the season.”
