McGuire pleased with point after “goal that never was” put them behind

Another point gained in Thackley’s quest to get to 40 points as soon as they can; they moved to 38 points in 14th place in Toolstation NCEL Premier Division after a 1-1 draw at Athersley Recreation (17th) at Sheerien Park yesterday-but as Joint Manager Pat McGuire explained, the Dennyboys could probably have already amassed 40 points at ten to five last night, writes Colin Muncie.

A crowd of 75 watched Brad Kilner’s 38th-minute goal give the home side the lead at the break; but right on time, Luke Robinson frustrated our friends in the Rec-In Crew with a late leveller.

Pat told the Bootiful Game that there was a hint of doubt about the Penguin’s opener. “Credit to the lads today for sticking to our style of play and game plan after the referee and linesman decided to award a goal” he explained “ whereas photo evidence from Athersley’s own camera man showed that the ball never crossed the line. Fair play to Athersley -they defended their lead well and worked hard but we’re disappointed not to come away with all three points. We mentioned the strength in depth we had in the squad before the game, and that showed as the three substitutes who came on made a great impact and helped us earn an important point.

Pat was grateful to have a familiar face and former Assistant Manager in his technical area. “With our two coaches away we asked Andy Patterson to help us out by running the dugout” Pat told us.

“He was a massive help and me and Mike (Garrod) would like to express our gratitude to him.
