A crucial three points for 18th-placed Staveley Miners Welfare in their battle to accelerate away from the relegation battle below them as they came from behind to defeat fourteenth placed Thackley at Inkersall Road in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division last night- and Dennyboys Joint Manager Pat McGuire was left ruing his side’s second half display, writes Colin Muncie.
A crowd of 94 saw Nicolas Matthews give Thackley a half time lead with his goal on 33 minutes; but in the second half, the Trojans turned the game on its head through Joseph Pugh (54 minutes) and Tyla Bell (68) to seal a vital win.
Pat told the Bootiful Game “We knew exactly what we’d be up against tonight, and that we’d have to match them throughout to get anything from the game. In the first half we played really well, won our battles, played some good stuff and were unlucky not to be more than one up. That seems to be dangerous for us at the minute and myself and Mike (Garrod, Joint Manager) said we need to come out and work hard again or we’ll find ourselves behind just like the Bottesford game”
Pat’s worst fears were realised after the interval. “Staveley came out and out-battled us in every department, and got their just desserts. It’s disappointing to let our performance levels drop so greatly, but as a group we will have to dust ourselves off and go again. We have some difficult games coming up now, so in true Thackley style we’ll have to do things the hard way -as usual”.
“Saturday can’t come quick enough”.
