Season’s end for the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division last night with a long season brought to conclusion by Thackley’s 2-1 away win at Liversedge, a win which takes the Dennyboys up to 15th in the final table, with’ Sedge finishing eleventh after their recent, crazy fixture roller-coaster-and Thackley’s Joint Manager Mike Garrod was happy to add an upbeat full stop to a tough campaign, writes Colin Muncie.
Joe Walton took his season’s tally to 31 for the season with the opener for Liversedge after just nine minutes, but the visitors were level through James Rothel two minutes before the break. It was a fine evening in Cleckheaton, but with six minutes left, Luke Robinson bagged the winner for Thackley to send most of the 74-strong Clayborn Ground home to programme their SatNav’s for Sedge’s NCEL League Cup Final clash with AFC Mansfield on May 21st.
Mike told the Bootiful Game “The boys did us proud last night. It was a nice end to a difficult season. I thought we were good value for the win; we kept the ball quite well in tricky conditions. We showed some togetherness, we worked hard for each other and managed the game well. Whilst we haven’t had to play too many games like some, it has been tough getting a squad together the past few weeks”.
Mike drew attention to the impact of midweek rearrangements on working players “Our fixtures have meant that we have only had two home games in the last couple of months, with a lot of long trips thrown in” he explained. “ Players availability has been limited; but credit to the lads as they have done everything they can to finish the season strongly, especially given that the season has been extended so much”.
