South Shields starlet Julio Arca retires from football

Former Sunderland and Middlesbrough midfielder and South Shields legend Julio Arca has decided, with immediate effect, to retire.

Arca has had an illustrious career spanning over 300 games and 26 goals before retiring in 2013. He then returned to football played for Willow Pond, a second-division pub side in the Sunderland Sunday League. In July 2015, he returned to Sunderland to join the club’s youth coaching staff.

On 4 September 2015, Arca joined Northern League Division Two club South Shields and went from strength to strength, winning three promotions on the bounce and Shields will now compete in the EvoStik Premier Division.
