Step 7 side Retford United have just been acquired by One Call Group, owned by Mansfield Town chairman, John Radford, and there is huge optimism that the club can quickly climb up the football pyramid – with ambitions of SIX consecutive promotions to the National League.
Simon Brammer commented to Lincolnshire Live, ““We only have one aim this season and that is promotion,” he said. “Anything less than that would be a disappointment.
“John Radford and the chairman [Nick Springthorpe] want to be in the Conference within six years which is a lot of promotions.
“It is a question of the players we can attract with the budget, which is in line with what you would expect at this level if not a little bit more.
“However, players can’t expect to come to Retford and be paid a lot of money, as that isn’t the case.
“Time will tell whether I am the man to do that, but I am confident we can get promotion this season.”
“There is a buzz going round with the Mansfield connection,” he said.
“Our away kit is Mansfield Town’s home kit just with a Retford badge on it.
“It [the partnership] is a great opportunity to really get the town behind us.”
United will be facing league opposition in Mansfield, Doncaster Rovers, Derby County and Nottingham Forest during pre season.
“We have to be realistic, though. We need to get to a level that will allow the talented kids to play their football.
“If they are 18-19 and coming in then quite often you don’t see a change in their development and the talented players can get bypassed, so we need to get up to that level where they can play.”
