Maltby announce new Captain and Vice-Captain!

The 2017/18 season was Maltby Main’s most successful season for 26 years and was led by Daniel Patterson and Dean Smith but for the new campaign they will he led by a different pairing.

“Last season we were expertly led in these roles by Daniel Patterson and Dean Smith who performed various heroics to win us points all season. Often playing through injury.

We particularly remember Smith’s trademark last minute header at home to Hall Road and his man of the match performance at home to promoted AFC Mansfield to single handily keep the score down when dropping into defence.

Likewise Danny who scored every penalty he took and stopped many an attack to then set us on our way. He will also be remembered for expertly setting up the winner again v Hall Road but away, with a delightful dink through ball! Great win that night.

These are two players we hope to continue with us at Main onto next season of course. You’d rather have them with you then against you!

We have something going here in recent seasons and they have been part of it no doubt about that.

But for the 18/19 season there will be a change in the roles and we are pleased as a club to say that next season and hopefully beyond our Club Captain will be Joe Austin and our Vice-Captain will be Steven Hopewell. These are roles that both have held in previous seasons.

It’s a worthy responsibility for these two players to represent us by; as they have between them 215 appearances (Joe has 124 and Steve has 91). Of which 54 appearances (34 & 20) were last season.

Joe would have had a 40+ appearance record if it wasn’t for a late season injury which was best left to rest. But even still, Joe came to every game, home and away to help out pre match and post match and also offer in match support. Even being a named sub just in case – he would have still gone on injured.

Similarly Steve; he attended games in the same capacity and also games when he was ineligible to play as he was cup tied. He even made his way to an away game alone which he couldn’t make for the start of a rearranged kick off time of 1pm. He was a named sub, turned up at half time and went on soon after and set up the second goal winner (v Barton Town).

Steve played all the previous two seasons at the club and most of last season from December.

As mentioned, Joe has been club captain under a previous manager and Steve was Vice Captain too. So it’s a role they will relish and have accepted to do again which is fantastic. They are very popular amongst other players and the non playing team too.

It’s as good as a brand new signing when two players of this status stay at the club and take on additional roles of represenatation as this.

Let’s hope they all have a great season
