Former Grimsby Town centre-back Rob Atkinson has joined Spennymoor Town from Guiseley in a welcomed move by the County Durham side.
A statement from the club says, “Atkinson, 31, who plays at the centre of defence, joins having previously played for Barnsley, Fleetwood and Accrington Stanley.
The defender also enjoyed three successful loan spells at Grimsby Town before joining The Mariners permanently in 2009, making 117 appearances for the club overall.
He was part of the Fleetwood side who won the Conference Premier title in 2012.
Atkinson believes he is joining a club which is building momentum: “I can’t wait to get on board. From the first time I spoke to people involved at Spennymoor I knew it was a club going in the right direction.
“It’s something I knew I wanted to be part of. Here’s to what will hopefully be the start of a successful season.”
Manager Jason Ainsley believes Atkinson will play a significant role for the club next season: “Rob is an experienced central defender with lots of football league appearances, and there is no doubt he will be a pivotal player for us this season.
“It was no coincidence that when he went on loan to Bradford Park Avenue from Guiseley last season their form was excellent.””
