Williams and Mansaram strike Armthorpe to victory

Goals from Luke Williams and Darren Mansaram saw Welfare run out 2-1 winners at the M. Pilbeam Construction Stadium this afternoon against a Bottesford side from the division above, writes Steve Pennock.

With 30 seconds on the clock Jordan Buckham was fouled some 35 yards out and he immediately played a quick free-kick forward for Williams to lob the ball over the advancing keeper from the edge of the box to put Welfare ahead.

Goalkeeper Adam Stevens kept Welfare ahead on 12 minutes when he dived to his left to save a low angled shot and three minutes later Welfare had a good chance when Hodgson had a good run from half way into the Bottesford box before squaring to Williams who fired over the bar.

Bottesford equalised on 20 minutes when Welfare justifiably appealed for a foul on Williams on half way but the referee wasn’t impressed, enabling the visitors to break quickly, playing an excellent through ball for their striker to plant the ball past Stevens.

On 28 minutes Williams was sent away down the right and he crossed for Buckham who saw his close range shot fly straight at the keeper and bounce away to safety.

Stevens was called into action again on 38 minutes, saving well with his legs whilst just before half time Jason Crisp tried his luck from over 35 yards out with his low shot being pushed past the left hand upright.

Two minutes after the break Williams had an angled shot which flew straight at the keeper and, having introduced three of his substitutes at half time manager Mike Carmody introduced the other three on 62 minutes. Within 2 minutes the ball was played into Mansaram who was in acres of space inside the box to control the ball before firing in to put Welfare ahead.

On 73 minutes Hodgson sent over an inviting cross from the right for the onrushing Chris Simpkins but the Bottesford ‘keeper was alert to collect off Simpkins’ toes 6 yards out.

The final effort of the game came eight minutes from time when Mansaram turned and sent in a powerful shot which flew narrowly wide of the left hand post.
