Following the decision by Thackley’s Phil Woollias to step down, the club members have elected Ben Oliver as the new Chairman of Thackley AFC.
Their official website says, “On 30 July 2018, Thackley AFC held its Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) at the clubhouse. At the AGM, Phil Woollias confirmed he was stepping down from both his role as Chairman and the Committee. Phil has been in his position for three years, and the club would like to place on record its thanks for his service over this time. We are pleased to confirm that Phil will however still be involved with Thackley AFC and is staying on as a coach of the Thackley AFC Ladies team, assisting the Ladies team manager and his wife, Michelle Woollias.
Also at the AGM Thackley AFC’s new Chairman was elected. Ben Oliver has been appointed as Chairman for the 2018/2019 season. Ben has grown up in Thackley and has been assisting Thackley AFC on a volunteer basis since October 2017. Ben is a solicitor working in Leeds and will be assisted by three new members of the committee this season. These are Mark Appleby and Rhyan Weston, both of whom are solicitors who Ben worked with in Leeds and Kate Bainbridge, who teaches at Thackley Primary School. The majority of the committee has been re-elected, save for Andy Blyth who has stepped down but will continue to assist the club on commercial and social media matters.
In relation to his appointment, Ben had the following to say:
“It is an honour and a privilege to be elected as Chairman of Thackley AFC. I am pleased that the “old guard” are staying on in their roles, as they are the lifeblood of this club. They have given so much, and I and the new committee members hope to be able to use our skills to assist them in pushing the club forward and supplementing the work which they have put in over, in some cases, the last 40 years.
These are exciting times for the club and Thackley. The First Team has a dynamic young manager in Pat McGuire, who has created a real buzz around the first team and a great team spirit. Pre-season has been testing against higher league opposition and there is a real identity in the way which Pat wants to play which is emerging. The Ladies team had a fantastic first season winning silverware and we hope they are able to continue their upward trajectory. We also have the U21 team which this season will be managed by Nathan Priestley, and who we hope will be able to develop players with a view to breaking into the First Team. Finally, we have just come off the back of a very successful Thackley Junior tournament at Dennyfield, which saw around 1,200 players over a three day period and 3,000 people through the gates.
For me, the aims for this season are to build on the sound foundations which the club currently has, to engage with the community and local businesses and to try give as much support as possible to our teams to have as successful a season as possible.”
The First Team have their first game of the season on Saturday 4 August 2018 away at local rivals Eccleshill United FC, KO 3pm. All support is welcomed for what is likely to be a testing opener to the season.
