Penistone Church finished 7th in their first ever season in the NCEL Premier Division – which was not a shock by any stretch as they recruited well in the summer and young manager Ian Richard’s worked well both off the field and tactically on the field.
We caught up with Ian after a very positive pre-season which saw an array of games and only one loss, “Pre-season has been very positive and productive. 18 of last season’s 19 man squad returned and signed, with Tom Cadzow returning from long term injury, Sam Scrivens graduating from the Reserves and Conner Glavin signing from Glasshoughton.
“This gives us a strong 21-man squad, which is the best we have assembled in the 9 years in charge. The fitness, form and performances of the players have been excellent during the pre-season games, which has led to some positive results, winning the Purdie Cup against Stocksbridge and the Toolstation cup v Buckland Athletic from the Western League.
“Competition for places is high, which is a great position to be in as a club and will hopefully breed success. I am as excited as ever starting my 10th season as manager with my brother, Dunc and believe that these players could make it an even better season than the last two.”
