Penistone Church are looking to repeat the success they had in the FA Cup last season. Reaching the Second qualifying road after beating teams like Whitby Town who play in the Evo-Stik Premier Division. They eventually lost out to Harrogate Town who were formerly of the Vanarama North last season.
They have had a good start to the FA Cup once again, this time beating North West Counties side Bootle FC 2-1. Bootle are one of the better North West Counties teams finishing 5th out of 23 last season.
The first goal of the game went to Penistone which was scored by Kieran Ryan. The game was level three minutes before half-time when Carl Peers scored for Bootle. The winning goal for Penistone came in the 76th minute, scored by Nathan Keightley. Penistone held on for the last 14 minutes to see them through to the Preliminary round where they will face either Hemsworth Miners Welfare or Runcorn Town.
Ian Richards Penistone manager shares his views on the game “Brilliant FA Cup tie today against a very strong Bootle FC. We had to dig deep in the first 25 minutes to contain them but we then won the ball high up the pitch, broke with pace and Kieran Ryan had the composure to finish in the bottom corner. We allowed them back into the game at the end of the 1st half, not defending well enough on a counter attack. We changed it tactically at half time which allowed us to win the ball higher up the pitch and dominate the ball in their half. Our winner came from an excellent cross from Kieran Ryan and a composed cushioned header back across the goal from Nathan Keightley.
“We were tested today by one of the highest profile sides in the NWCFL Premier Division and produced a performance that saw the players give everything, stick together and be tactically disciplined, which allowed us to progress into the next round and prepare for Thackley at home in the league on Wednesday.”
