There was a five goal thriller down at the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium which finished 3-2 in Selby Town’s favour. The unfortunate losers were Whickham FC, who gave a real good account of themselves
The game started off lively and there was a penalty shout for Whickham in the 3rd minute which was waved away by the referee. The chance of note came in the 18th minute, when Carl Stewart delivered a great ball over to two goal hero last weekend Samuel Cable who couldn’t quite generate enough power on his header to trouble the keeper.
The first goal of the game came in the 29th minute, good work from Andrew ‘Bully’ Bulford picking up the pieces from a Chad Collins header. Bully took a touch, and blasted the ball home from the edge of the 18 yard box to send Whickham 1-0 in front. Just before the half time whistle, star striker Samuel Cable got sent off which was a big blow to the hosts chances. Selby levelled the game from the penalty spot when there was a handball in the area, Carl Stewart converted the penalty and the game became all square at 1-1.
Ten minutes later Selby finally took the lead when a ball across the box was tucked away by Andy Brown. In the 70th minute it was level once again as Dale Burrell smashed the ball in from the edge of the area, which may have took a deflection (Courtesy of Whickham’s FC Twitter account). The winning goal came in the 73rd minute, scored by Will Ramsay with a peach of a striker following a corner.
There you have it, 3-2 to Selby and the 160 faithfuls who turned up were treated to a very fine game of football!
