After that opening day defeat at Handsworth Parramore, Penistone Church have got their season firmly back on track with consecutive home wins in the FA Cup and Toolstation NCEL Premier Division. Last night’s three point haul followed a come-from –behind 4-1 win over Thackley at the DSM Memorial Stadium-and Church Manager Ian Richards felt that his side’s win was thoroughly deserved, writes Colin Muncie.
The visiting Dennyboys took the lead after 26 minutes through Jordan Hines, but Elliott Firth levelled for Penistone just before the interval, in front of another excellent Church Street crowd of 142. It wasn’t until the last ten minutes, though, that Church made their dominance pay, and goals from Conor Glavin (81 mins) Sam Scrivens (86) and the evergreen Andy Ring (90) secured the win.
Ian told the Bootiful Game “Excellent to gain back to back wins following our FA cup victory on Saturday. Tonight we were dominant from the start and played some exceptional football in the first 30 minutes, creating numerous chances. Due to outstanding goalkeeping, last ditch defending and some wasteful finishing we couldn’t convert the chances that we created. Thackley hit us in the counter and we didn’t defend well enough to stop them scoring. We responded well to score from a free kick just before half time”.
Ian is hoping that his players can now build on the momentum provided on and off the pitch “ The second half was a more even contest but we looked a threat all night going forward , played some excellent football and got our rewards in the final 20 minutes with three well worked goals” he said. “The players deserved that win tonight and excited and entertained the 150 or so who attended”.
“We must now follow up our first league win with our first away win on Saturday at Yorkshire Amateur”.
