RICHARDS optimistic after Cup exit

Penistone Church exited the FA Cup at the Preliminary Round yesterday as they went down at home against Runcorn Town.

Runcorn raced into the lead through John Shaw and Ryan Cox. Church looked to have got back into the game when Sam Scrivens scored. However just 15 from time Runcorns Shaun Weaver finished off the scoring to know Church out of the FA Cup.

Church manager Ian Richards commented, “We changed things formation wise today to try and get a bit more presence further forward and for the main it worked well.

“Football is about fine margins. Our performance today was very good, in my opinion the better team lost but Runcorn Town were effective and capitalised on the few opportunities they had. Their first goal was a wonder strike. A volley from an acute angle into the top corner.

“We just had to accept that you can’t do anything about a moment of brilliance. The other two goals could have been prevented but were good finishes and came at pivotal times in the game, both when were in the ascendency and dominating the ball. We are gutted to be knocked out of the FA Cup but I am pleased with the players performances, with some fine tuning we are going to be a very good and successful side this season.

“The squad is positive and the spirit is high so we will respond next week in the FA Vase away at Shelley. As always the club put on a great Matchday experience, there was a great atmosphere from a 200+ crowd. The club is in a healthy position and very soon the results will reflect that.”
