Borough bow out of FA Cup with heads firmly held high

NCEL Division One side Grimsby Borough exited the FA Cup at the 1st Qualifying Round yesterday at the hands of EvoStik side Stafford Rangers 2-1.

Danny Trott opens the scoring for Grimsby Borough.

Borough got off to the perfect start with striker Danny Trott scoring after 15 minutes but two quick goals from Kyle Perry and Harry Benns turned the time on its head and ultimately dumped Borough out of the Cup.

Joint manager Daniel Barrett was pleased with his sides performance, despite the result, “I am very disappointed to at least not being in the hat. We played some very good stuff today and should have scored more in the first half at 1-0 up. Two really poor decisions has cost us and that’s the hard bit to take, we having been undone or outplayed we handed them two goals and you cannot afford to do that against sides like Stafford.

Kyle Perry equalises for Stafford Rangers.

“Credit to them they was organised and very clever. It shows how well we played when they are holding the ball up in the corner with 10 mins to go. I’m proud of the lads and we can now focus on our bread and butter.”

Harry Benns seals the win for Stafford Rangers.

Whilst Nathan Collins echoed this, “Really proud of all of our lads today, we have outplayed a team from three leagues above for long periods and created some really good chances. At one-nil up I thought we was in control and then a couple of mistakes in 5 minutes has cost us but I can’t ask anymore of any of our players and if we perform to that level in our league week in week out we will be fine.”
