Thackley’s FA Vase adventure ended at Dennyfield yesterday afternoon after an 81st minute winner from Adam Burnicle settled the FA Vase Second Round tie in favour of visitors West Auckland from the Northern League; but it was a performance which left Dennyboys Manager, Pat McGuire, full of praise for his side, writes Colin Muncie.
After the game, which was watched by a fine crowd of 148, Pat told TBG, “As disappointed as we all are to be out of the FA Vase, I couldn’t have asked for more from my players today. They stuck to the game plan, they were disciplined and kept their shape, and we frustrated a very good West Auckland side. Chances were pretty limited all game and we had the golden one when we were awarded a penalty after some great work by Kris Hargreaves and Luke Robinson late in the second half. On any other day the keeper guesses wrong and we go on to win the game, but it wasn’t to be.”
Pat was pretty philosophical after a good day for the club. “All in all, it was a good cup tie, but taking the positives we had a good crowd in and our lads put on a real honest and hard-working display,” he summarised. “I said after the game that the lads have set a benchmark now and if we can play that way consistently then we will certainly win more than we lose.”
“All the best to West Auckland in the next round.”
