It was a case of what might have been for Glasshoughton Welfare who slip to ninth in Toolstation NCEL Division One after a 3-0 defeat to fifth-placed Selby Town at the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium yesterday-and Glassy’s Joint Manager Lee Vigars felt that the outcome hinged on his own side’s wastefulness -and the home side’s efficiency – in front of goal, writes Colin Muncie.
A super 204 crowd watched Liam Flanagan edge the Robins ahead after thirteen minutes, and Alasan Ann doubled the advantage eight minutes later. Joe Dale settled the destination of the points with a third with two minutes left.
Lee didn’t disguise his annoyance at the score line “ I’m frustrated rather than disappointed today as yet again we have gifted two soft goals and made things so hard for ourselves” he admitted . We started brightly and should have gone one up when Poz (Ryan Poskitt) has put Matty Bowman through one on one but their keeper has pulled off a great save. Matty has terrorised the home right full back all afternoon and got round the back of him time after time but through luck on a few occasions and some good defending the hosts kept us out. Two poor individual mistakes have cost us massively and given Selby the lead at the break which in all honesty was a score we didn’t feel we deserved”.
“We certainly didn’t feel out of the game at half time and we felt that if we could get the next goal we could go on and get something” Lee went on “Like the first half, we started strongly from the restart and again it was Matty causing real problems down their right channel. Poz has fired a couple of shots off from distance which the keeper kept hold of, but we felt it was a matter of time before we scored. With time running out we’ve pushed numbers forward which has allowed Selby to get in behind a few times. Matt (Zaniewski) has pulled off a couple of great saves before finally being beaten in the last minute”.
“It certainly wasn’t a 3-0 game” Lee insisted “but credit to Selby who took their chances where we didn’t. We’ll reflect on the performance in detail on Tuesday night at training- and get ready to go again next weekend”.
