A last minute Matthew Sykes penalty gifted Worksop Town to a narrow 1-0 win over high-flying Penistone Church and manager Craig Denton was delighted with the victory.
“I thought from start to finish we were exceptional today. We needed to be because Penistone Church are a very well-organised, well-drilled, strong side. We knew that the minimum we had to put in was work rate – on the ball, off the ball – and we did that. I just thought if we do that we’ll have an opportunity where a little bit of our quality might show through and it did.
“We had five or six chances in the first half and Penistone had their chances as well. I thought our resilience in terms of our defending… our back three were phenomenal. I genuinely did. We came there today to go and take something from the game and we’ve come away with three points.
“All we can do is concentrate on ourselves and concentrate on our own performances. What other people do is up to them.
“I was looking for a reaction from recent weeks. I don’t think we’ve been far off it, to be honest. I think I’ve been a little bit too harsh on the lads. Today everyone put a shift in and that’s from the lads who came off the bench as well as the lads who started the game. I thought our defence was solid and our goalkeeper Dave Reay had a really good game so I was really pleased, especially against – and I’ll keep mentioning it – a side like Penistone!
“They’ve won their recent six or seven run of games. There aren’t many sides who are going to go to Penistone and collect three points. I just thought we deserved it.
The only sour note was the four sendings off at the end of the game. Was it two for each side?
“Yes. To be honest, there were a few handbags towards the end but I didn’t really see much. The referee came into the dressing room at the end of the game and sent two players from either side off from what he’s seen.
“I don’t really want to talk about that! I just want to talk about good we’ve done and I don’t want to encroach on highlighting how well we’ve done. I think at the end of the game that’s happened. Obviously Penistone are disappointed that they’ve lost a game because they’ve been on such a fantastic run.
“I’m delighted we’ve got the performance first, then obviously the three points!”
