At the end of a brilliant year at the Mitton Group Stadium, Eccleshill United will celebrate Christmas in a lofty ninth place in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division after their come-from-behind win over Athersley Recreation (14th) on Saturday afternoon –and it would be fair to say that Eagles manager Sean Regan saw plenty to be pleased about in that second half, writes Colin Muncie.
A Kingsway crowd of 83 saw Chris Wood continue to roll back the years with a 17th-minute opener for Athersley which gave the Penguins the half time advantage – but the home side struck three times in the last twenty minutes through Luke Harrop (72 minutes) Khurram Shazad (77 minutes) and Jake Thompson (89 minutes) to seal another three point haul.
“We do put ourselves under pressure sometimes,” Sean told TBG, “but our squad of players continues to progress and Saturday was another example of how we can turn a game on its head at any one point. Our second half display showed character and positive application along with the quality and determination that we have in abundance in our team.”
“Yes, we changed our system and personnel in the second half,” Sean explained, “but it shows how adaptable we are as a group of very good players.”
The Bootiful Game would like to wish Sean Regan and everyone at Eccleshill United, and Darren Bell, Chris Wood, the Rec-In-Crew and everyone at Athersley Recreation a Merry Christmas.
