BENN’s expecting another tight encounter, in a recent history of nip-and-tuck meetings with Athersley!

Hemsworth Miners Welfare Manager, Wayne Benn takes his fourth-placed squad the seven or so miles to Sheerien Park on Saturday to tackle 13th-placed Athersley Recreation in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division – and Wayne is expecting another tight encounter, in a recent history of nip-and-tuck meetings, writes Colin Muncie.

“On Saturday we make the short journey to neighbours Athersley Recreation looking to build on our good results around the Christmas period,” Wayne told us. “We never have an easy game against Rec and I don’t expect Saturday will be any different. The game at home was very forgettable; we weren’t at our best and Athersley came to make life difficult and frustrate -which they have every right to do. We will need a strong performance to come away with all three points, but we are in good form despite missing several key players. The squad has really stood up to be counted in their absence – and will need to do so again.”

Wayne’s selection options will look a lot rosier after the weekend. “After Saturday we will have 4/5 players available,” he reported, “which will certainly help us – but for now our only focus is on a tough game on Saturday.”
