Owls awarded FA Cup Special Team Award!

We are in the midst of the #10 Year Challenge whereby social media users are posting various shots from ten years ago and comparing these with current photographs.

Well, 10 years ago Cleethorpes Town were plying their trade in Step 7 Humber Premier League, playing in front of just a handful of supporters.

Fast forward 10 years, three title winning seasons, an FA Vase Runners-Up medal, a host of Cup successes and an average of 327 supporters through the gates at their new home at The Linden Club – things are really looking up for The Owls.

This season, by all accounts did not start too well, but their FA Cup exploits certainly caught the attention of the media, as impressive performances and wins against Loughborough University, Walsall Wood, Bamber Bridge and against National League North side Guiseley saw the Lincolnshire side rack up the most goals (19) of all Non-League clubs in the 2018-19 FA Cup.

We, at The Bootiful Game, spent four seasons with Cleethorpes Town compiling their football programmes, being their photographer, and general media manager and was approached by Phil Annets, founder of FA Cup Factfile and the FA Cup Team Awards (FACTAs) to present their award to them.

The Bootiful Game Editor Craig Kendall, with Cleethorpes Town manager David Smith, Chairman Jason Ledden and Assistant Manager Matthew Bloomer at The Linden Homes Club presenting the framed award.

Quote from Phil Annets, founder of FA Cup Factfile and the FA Cup Team Awards (FACTAs): “The FACTAs were introduced in the 2015-16 season to recognise the efforts and performances of non-league clubs in the FA Cup. Over 640 non-league clubs participate in this great Cup competition each year, but the vast majority of their achievements go under the radar. The FACTAs are designed to raise awareness of these achievements and were voted on by thousands of non-league clubs’ fans.

“The 2018-19 Special Team Award FACTA recognises clubs that have embraced the competition – perseverance against the odds, goal-scoring feats, fans engagement, etc – and is awarded this year to Cleethorpes Town for their excellent Cup run that saw them score more goals than any other Non-League side.

The EvoStik Northern Premier League Division 1 East side scored 19 goals in total in seven FA Cup matches, including an amazing 5-0 victory at higher league opponents Bamber Bridge in a 2nd Qualifying Round replay in which Jon Oglesby scored a hat-trick. The Owls won the national public vote against three other nominated non-league teams and are the deserved winners of this year’s Special Team Award FACTA.”
