In the spotlight with Chris Chapman

As Armthorpe Welfare reported yesterday, Welfare manager Mike Carmody has recently added Chris Chapman to his management team.

Chris is also currently the manager of Frickley Athletic U21’s.

Steve Pennock found out a bit more about him and his thoughts on joining Armthorpe Welfare:

First of all, can you tell us a bit about your football background?

I played grassroots level and was given an opportunity to perform within the academy ranks at Barnsley and Doncaster but I then left the sport and took up running where I was part of the Yorkshire Elite Squad representing county and country. This also involved coaching younger athletes as well. From there I played rugby for Doncaster Lakers and Sheffield Eagles scholarship teams while representing local teams and I finished playing at Castleford Panthers.

From playing I decided to go into coaching which is something I maintained in multi sports for over 10 years but I am now solely focusing on football which I have done so for over 6 years. I have gained valuable experience with foundation phase children up to Under 21’s at Frickley AFC where I am currently and have coached age groups in between while learning my trade.

What made you decide to join us at Armthorpe?

Frickley Under 21’s played Armthorpe in a pre-season friendly last summer and to be fair Armthorpe tried to play the style that I was incorporating at Frickley. From there I stayed in contact with Mike and saw that results were not going our way. After thinking what to do I decided to contact Mike and offer my services which started with my attendance at the Winterton game where we got a good performance and deserved win!

What do you think you will bring to us?

I feel that I have vast experience in multi sports which gives me different dimensions of coaching. Also my knowledge and continued self development can be adapted in order to get the best out of the individuals. I will bring education, accountability and confidence to the lads with structured and well thought out training sessions.

What do you hope to achieve with Armthorpe?

I hope to achieve survival first but believe that the team have the ability to finish in the top half of the table with aspirations of aiming for a top ten finish.
