A second shock of the night in the NCEL occurred as Glasshoughton Welfare grabbed a last minute winner away at Division One leaders Campion.
Marc Lumb put Welfare ahead just before the break, but Campion fired back mid-way through the second half. As the crowd of 111 were fumbling for their car keys and preparing to leave the The Kay & Lane Insurance Stadium @ Manningham Mills Sports & Community Association, Zivanai Mbire popped up with the winner, which delighted the joint-management team from Glassy.
Lee Vigars was delighted. “Superb performance from our boys tonight throughout the entire 90 minutes. I felt we were the better side in the first half and deservedly went in at the break leading 1-0 with a well taken goal from debutant Marc Lumb. But we fully expected a backlash in the second period and that’s exactly what we got.”
“It really was back to the walls at times, but we continued to put our bodies on the line to keep them out. Campion have some great attacking players so are a constant threat going forward and with their height as well you know set pieces are going to challenge you.”
“But to a man our lads did the jobs we asked of them and when our chance came in the 90th minute it was a cool finish from Izzy to seal the win. Marc and Simmy were both outstanding on their debut and made a huge difference to the side but like I said, all 14 of the players tonight take the plaudits for coming here and beating a very strong Campion side in their own backyard.”
“What a great win and it was also fantastic to see so many Glassy fans make the trip over. I’m sure they all enjoyed tonight as well!”
Whilst Darren Holmes added, “Fantastic result for us tonight. It has really picked everyone up. The changing rooms were buzzing after the game. What a difference a few days make!”
“The lads worked their socks off for 90 minutes and that was the difference from Saturday. We gave debuts to a couple of lads tonight who were also outstanding.”
“We rode our luck at times and Campion are a quality team well worth their top of the league status. It was our night tonight and pinching the win near the end capped a great performance for us.”
“All the lads will be looking forward to Saturday I’m sure, on our away day in Skegness.”
