McGuire with special praise for Whitley as Thackley beat local rivals!

The crowd at Throstle Nest last night had to wait until the last 18 minutes last night to see any goals between Albion Sports and neighbours Thackley – but boy, were they entertained.

Luke Robinson put Patrick McGuire’s side in front on 72 minutes. Eleven minutes later Paul Whitley doubled their advantage. Albion immediately got themselves back into the game but Thackley put the nail into the coffin three minutes before time with Jack Normanton’s 6th league goal of the season to move the Dennyboys up to 14th.

“Tonight was given a big build up as a local derby and with us both being on the same amount of points there was obviously some extra excitement,” Mcguire said.

“I thought Albion started the brighter and in all honesty they had what looked like a stone wall penalty turned down. We reacted well to that and hit the post and had a shot cleared off the line, but I reiterated to the lads at half time we’d been lucky and were playing nowhere near our capabilities. Credit to the lads it was a gritty performance.”

“Midweek games are never easy with lads working and we played some ok stuff in fits and starts but never really got going – mainly due to Albion making it difficult for us.”

“The substitutes turned the game for us, so credit to Robbo and Asa for the spark they brought, along with new signing Andy Boote in midfield. It’s no secret I want us to try to play a certain way and will never be completely satisfied unless we pull it off but even though we weren’t at our best in possession I’m thrilled with the three points tonight.”

“I’ve got to give a special mention to our captain, Paul Whiteley, who covered every blade of grass tonight and was fully deserving of his goal which capped a real leader’s performance. It was great to see the togetherness after the game and we have a strong squad now with players missing out on being in the 16, so there will be some rotation and lads know they have to be on their game as there’s stiff competition for places.”

“Hopefully this sets us in good stead for the remaining eleven games.”
