Our roving reporter Steve Hewitt also took in the Toolstation NCEL Division One clash between Swallownest and Parkgate at Rotherham Road yesterday. Here’s Steve’s account of proceedings for The Bootiful Game, which is significantly more entertaining than the ninety minutes was. Over to Steve… (Main photograph by Toby Wild goose)
Jason Short (Own Goal) 55.
On Tuesday 02/04/2019 when Swallownest play Shirebrook Town, 50% of the gate receipts are going to MIND the Mental health charity. So, come and support a worthy cause and help others in need.
The game itself was played in perfect conditions and the pitch looked ideal. With both sides using the full width of the pitch, a good game seemed on the cards. Yet as the half progressed both sides seemed to cancel each other out and chances were rare. Parkgate defenders were at one stage needlessly appealing for offside; thankfully their cries went unheeded. The game needed a goal and on 44 minutes Jason Short had a chance, but his header from inside the six-yard box went over the bar.
The second half started as the first ended and chances were not being created by either side. Then on 55 minutes a corner from Parkgate saw Jason Short attempt to clear the ball only to score an unfortunate own goal. Minutes later he had an effort at the right end but was wide of the target. With no other chances created, Parkgate gained a victory that neither team deserved, as on this performance, a draw would have been a fairer result. Referee Steven Beresford had a good game and the half-time hospitality hosted by Mick Green was spot on.
