Swallownest 1

Alex Lill 27

Hallam 1
Kieren Watson .

Before the game Swallownest had amassed a large selection of Easter Eggs, collected in support of Sheffield Children’s Hospital. A noble gesture from a club that in the past twelve months has come on in leaps and bounds both on and off the pitch, writes Steve Pewitt.

The game itself got off to a lively start with promotion chasing Hallam having an opportunity in the first minute. Kieran Watson found himself in front of goal but his volley was high and wide. With both teams striving to gain the advantage it was Mitch Husbands who next had a chance for Hallam on 15 minutes, only to see his effort well saved by Josh Lill.

Two minutes later Kieran Watson had another opportunity but his header in the six yard box was well off target. Patience is a virtue and Swallownest were rewarded on 27 minutes when a diagonal run and shot from Alex Lill gave the hosts the lead. Despite plenty of good passing football from both sides chances were minimal, and there was no further scoring.

HT 1-0.

The second half saw Jordan Livett attempt a shot from close range for Swallownest on 47 minutes but his effort went high over the bar. Hallam now seemed to up their game and most of the action was in the Swallownest half.

On a rare excursion toward the visitors’ goal, Swallownest appealed for a corner which the Referee didn’t give.

As a result, Hallam swept forward and Kieran Wilson saw his lob level the score after 61 minutes. It was no more than Hallam deserved at the time, and Jack McCarthy spurned a chance by shooting over the bar on 64 minutes. Moments later Mitch Husbands also fired well over the bar from the edge of the penalty area.

The game took another twist on 84 minutes when Aaron Statham looked to have given Swallownest the lead, only for the linesman’s flag to be raised. After a brief consultation the Referee disallowed the goal apparently for a foul in the six yard box. The game ended in a draw and to be fair it was a good game to have seen.
