Shirebrook pull off superb Campion draw

Last night Shirebrook Town had “nothing” but pride to play for as they hosted the NCEL Division One league leaders Campion, but they certainly proved a few people wrong with their gritty performance and ground out a surprising 1-1 draw. (Main photograph by Nigel Owen)

Aiden Day put Campion in front just after the break, but a screamer from Robbie Savage from 40 yards out squared the game up with 18 minutes to play and that is how it stayed!

The result ends a difficult season for Shirebrook, with Town finishing 18th, whilst Campion know that a loss by Grimsby Borough tonight against Ollerton Town would see the title go to Campion. However, any points from Borough would see the title been decided on the final day on Saturday as Borough host Campion at Bradley FDC.

Ever present goalkeeper Levi Owen spoke to the press afterwards and was pleased with the point. “Tonight was a brilliant performance from the lads; I said at the weekend that everyone could rely on the fact we’d do our best to take it to the last day. And we’ve done our part.”

“Funnily enough if we’d played that way all year then we’d probably have had no worries about relegation. Defensively, we were very stable again.”

“And going forward we didn’t create all that much in honesty, however, yet again Robbie Savage has hit a volley from 40+ yards on his left foot over the ‘keeper. That’s twice he’s done that against Campion.”

“Unfortunately I came off just before half-time with a quad injury. I’d picked it up the other week against Emley and probably shouldn’t have played on Saturday against EYC. But in a game of that magnitude I couldn’t bare to miss it.”

“However that now means I’ve started all of Shirebrook games this season which is something I’m especially proud of, aged 18. I wish both Grimsby Borough and Campion all the best for Saturday, it’s sure to be an absolute cracker.”

A massive thank you to Levi who has provided The Bootiful Game with some great content this season. His Dad Nigel has provided excellent photographs of their journey this season also, so thank you!
