Thackley finished an inconsistent season with an excellent 3-1 win at Barton Town yesterday, a result which consolidated their 15th placed finish in the Premier Division, writes Ian Robinson.
The crowd of 113 at Swan Lane certainly got their moneys worth according to Dennyboys Manager Pat McGuire who told us, “More often than not, the final game of the season is a slow paced, token gesture of an affair between two teams playing for nothing but pride, but this certainly wasn’t the case on Saturday! The rain made the surface fantastic to play on which allowed both teams to play some great football, at a great pace.”
“Rico’s a top Manager and Barton are well organised and have good players all over the park and caused us problems, particularly with midfield runs from deep. We defended well though and gave our front three some good service and Jack, Nicky and Robbo were unplayable at times. With a 2-0 lead at the break, we knew Barton would come after us so I told the lads to stay relaxed, defend big and hit them on the break, as gaps will open up.”
“I thought the game was a good advert for the NCEL and from our point of view, it’s great to finish an inconsistent season with a win, and reach the 40 point mark which is a good platform for us to build on next season.”
The Bootiful Game would like to thank Pat for his thoughtful contributions throughout the season, and wish Thackley good luck for next season.
